Our Story

Our Story

I've always loved making things with my hands. As a young girl, I learned to knit and crochet, and there was something deeply satisfying about creating something beautiful from a simple skein of yarn. Looking back, I can see that those early lessons planted the seeds for a journey I never could have imagined.

I married a real cowboy, and together we've built our life on a family ranch in Hatch, Idaho. We've raised six wonderful children while running a cow-calf operation, and horses have always been an important part of our everyday life. Ranching isn't just what we do—it's who we are.

My journey into cinch making began with a simple conversation. One day my son, Royce, came to me and said, "Mom, you should learn how to make a mohair cinch."

I asked him why.

His answer was simple:

"Because I want one."

That one request changed everything.

I began studying handmade mohair cinches, learning how they were woven and why horsemen valued them so highly. I took a few classes, gathered my supplies, and started weaving. It didn't take long before I was completely hooked.

What I loved most was that I wasn't just making something pretty—I was making something useful. Every cinch had a purpose. It would be used by someone who loved horses as much as we do.

I started making cinches for family and friends, and before long people began asking if they could buy one. As my passion grew, so did my desire to learn. I continued taking classes, studying different techniques, and challenging myself to become a better craftsman. Even today, I'm always looking for new ideas and ways to improve.

Then another unexpected opportunity came my way.

A friend asked if I would teach her how to make a cinch.

I said, "Sure."

What started as helping one friend quickly turned into something much bigger. My son, Landon, began building weaving looms for me, and before I knew it, I was teaching classes almost every weekend. Watching someone weave their very first cinch and proudly say, "Wow... I made that!" has become one of the greatest joys of my life.

Then COVID changed everything.

Like so many small businesses, I had to find a new way forward. In-person classes came to a sudden stop, but I wasn't ready to stop teaching. Instead, I found a way to bring my classes online. I developed a cinch-making app so students could continue learning from wherever they lived. Today, people can learn at their own pace, no matter where they call home, or use the app as a refresher whenever they need it.

Over the years, I've been blessed to meet incredible people through cinch making. Many have become lifelong friends, and I continue to be inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm they bring to every class.

Today, Hatch Idaho Cinches is more than a business. It's a way to share the craftsmanship, traditions, and values that have been part of our ranch for generations. Every cinch is woven with care, every class is taught from the heart, and every customer becomes part of a community that values quality, hard work, and the western way of life.

Thank you for allowing me to share what I love. I hope that whether you purchase one of my handcrafted products or learn to weave your own, you'll experience the same joy that began with one simple request from my son many years ago.
